Acting as a differential shaft for driving rear wheels, it usually goes through the rear bridge. Its inner side is connected with the gear spline of the differential carrier, the outer side is with a flange equipped with bolts, nuts and other fastening parts for assembly with wheel hub bearings.

There are also some types of rear axle shafts integrated with rear-wheel bearings as complete parts.
